"The sculptor Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988), whose interest in the creation of three-dimensional forms knew no boundaries, produced not only sculptures, but also stage sets, furniture, lamps, gardens, and urban spaces. In the process, this multi-talented artist and designer, who studied under Constantin Brancusi, successfully bridged the gap between the fine and applied arts. Classic interior objects such as his sculptural Coffee Table and the famous Akari lanterns number among Noguchi's best-known product designs. Connoisseurs of the theatre regard this long-term collaboration with Martha Graham as a high point in the history of modern dance theatre. A lifelong nomad, Noguchi realised his unique landscape designs and striking interiors in the USA, Europe and Japan, often in co-operation with renowned architects such as Kenzo Tange and Gordon Bunshaft. With six contributions by prominent authors and two historical essays, the catalogue Isamu Noguchi - Sculptural Design provides a comprehensive survey of Noguchi's interdisciplinary oeuvre. The extensive illustrative material from the archive of the Isamu Noguchi Foundation Inc., New York, is complemented by a documentation of the synonymous exhibition, which was staged by Robert Wilson." -- Back Cover.
