This photographic tribute to New York's most famous, and tragically lost, landmark is unique in that it starts with the construction of the awesome project in 1967, and records the life and times surrounding the World Trade Center over a period of three decades. In 1967, Hideaki Sato, a young Japanese photographer embarking on a new life and career in New York City, was overwhelmingly impressed by the scale of the massive new construction site that he came across during his city ramblings. That discovery was the beginning of a lifetime's work of photographing the World Trade Center. These astonishing photographs tell an eloquent story of the excitement surrounding the rebuilding of Manhattan, and of the impressive American accomplishment. It is a story of power, progress, commitment and creation. It is also a poignant reminder that the skyline of Manhattan today has a haunting similarity, at least in one respect, to that of more than 30 years earlier. Sato's photographs also provide a nostalgic record of New York and its inhabitants in the 1960's. This combination produces a truly memorable account of a city, its people, its dreams, and both the glory and the tragedy of the World Trade Center buildings.
