The conference proceedings report on the first three years of Strategic Technical Research in English Heritage's cathedral grants scheme. The conference took place in March 1994. The scientific and technical investigations were commissioned to find answers to the common building decay problems faced by cathedrals. They have a wider usefulness in the conservation field being equally applicable to the majority of historic buildings in the United Kingdom and overseas which are suffering the ravages of material decay and deterioration.
