Afrika heeft in de afgelopen eeuw de snelste bevolkingsgroei beleefd in de geschiedenis van onze planeet. Dit heeft niet alleen geleid tot een enorme druk op zowel mens als milieu, maar het heeft ook immense verandering gebracht in de economische logica van het continent. Een Afrikaanse dichtregel zegt dat men nooit weet wat het regenseizoen gaat brengen, maar deze ontwikkeling geeft reden tot hoop. Dankzij de mobiele telefonie raken Afrikaanse markten geïntegreerd en kan men in bijvoorbeeld Zuid-Afrika en Nigeria mobiel bankieren. Het buitenland investeert meer dan ooit in het continent. Bovendien bezit Afrika 80 procent van alle braakliggende landbouwgrond in de wereld, en daar heeft het buitenland ook een begerig oog op laten vallen. Toch is er geen reden om aan te nemen dat Afrika op weg is naar politieke stabiliteit en ook zullen de 'mislukte staten' niet verdwijnen.
