"All of sundry have a personal vision of the ideal city. Since Plato's Atlantis- that offers the first description of an ideal city and appears like a founding myth- man has endeavoured to create his own city through various means, from bookwriting (Thomas More, Thomas Campanella, Louis Sébastien Mercier or Emile Zola) to the actual materializing of his dreams (Richelieu or Pienza). In the course of time, the criteria of the ideal city have been changing: some are still valid, others appears sporadically, others eventually fall into oblivion. Finally, one notices that search for an inaccessible ideal, through mostly impraticable, hinges on a myth, that of Atlantis, that gradually becomes synonymous of utopia when one evokes the ideal city. This work will thus show not only the perpetuation of the atlantean myth throughout the search for the ideal city, but also the reverses suffered by this utopia, by studying its own evolution and also the evolution of man's perception of the ideal city since the Antiquity until these days as well as the various means trough which man expresses this search: architecture, painting, philosophy, literature."--Page [535].
