Francesco Solimena (1657-1747), der bedeutendste Maler des Spätbarock in Neapel, zählt zu den begehrtesten Künstlern seiner Zeit. Ohne seine Heimat jemals länger zu verlassen, gewann er die mächtigsten Fürsten Europas als Auftraggeber. Die Studie untersucht die Gründe für diese ausserordentliche Karriere, die zur Zeit des österreichischen Vize regnums (1707-1734) ihren Höhepunkt erreichte. Farbprächtige Deckengemälde in den Wiener Adelspalästen zeugen ebenso von Solimenas weitreichendem Ruhm wie seine figurenreichen Freskendekorationen für die Kirchen Neapels. Erstmals werden diese Hauptwerke ausführlichen Analysen unterzogen und vor dem Hintergrund neuer Quellen als vielschichtige Programmbilder entschlüsselt. Zudem öffnet sich ein neuer Blick auf die professionelle Selbstinszenierung Solimenas.
