Summary:

Martha Fernández explains in this book that the symbolic culture of New Spain played a crucial role in the use of formal solutions that were adopted in the architecture of Mexico throughout the colonial period. The symbolism was not an isolated issue or minor at the time, on the contrary, was an integral part of religious and civil life. " Knowing then the symbolism of the forms adopted in viceregal Mexico, leads us to understand the particular characteristics acquired over the architecture of that period of history. The octagonal dome as an image of the Temple of Jerusalem, the spire of the chapels as a representation of Mount Calvary, the brightness of the baroque churches, as a manifestation of God's light, the altarpieces semi-hexagons as an abstraction of the name of Christ and many other solutions we explain the formal construction of the sacred architecture of New Spain, as in the case of media Solomon, the author devotes several studies in which not only analyzes the helical column, one that has been traditionally viewed as Solomonic but also others that may be considered as hypothetical reconstructions of the pillars "Jachín and Boaz" of Solomon stood on the porch of his temple, as the octagonal columns and pilasters waving. Urban planning as an essential part of the and was also part of the ideological concept and gradually, over time, orthogonal cities such as Mexico and Puebla were transformed in the imagination of New Spain, the earthly image of the Heavenly Jerusalem. This book, originally by the approach that analyzes the architecture of New Spain, raises questions, but also offers, through symbolism, important elements for reaching a better understanding of architecture erected in Mexico during the colonial era"-- P.
