The Colonia de los Arquitectos (later San Rafael) was developed during the early Porfiriato period and was planned inspired in European urban and architectural designs that included modernization developments: running potable water, street lights, public transportation, mail services, telephones, etc. The style and function of the 19th century local architecture was defined for its middle-class bourgeois inhabitants: local and foreign merchants and industrials responsible in a large for the modernization process of Mexico.
