This publication of 14 contributions focuses on gated communities, they have proliferated in recent decades, more and more frequently in the urban setting, and aims to clarify the meaning, history and function of this new neighborhood. "The walls show fear, almost terror, that residents experience of crime that seems to stand in the city" the authors note in the introduction, stating the nature of the phenomenon, which further explains that nostalgia idealizes the redoubt, dreams of the nuclear family as a social base, coined as old mock claims of distinction, and fears of the heterogeneity of the postmodern city. Divided into two parts, the book analyzes the process of urban expansion in border defense in northwestern Mexico, focusing on architecture, quality of life, the use of public space and the proposed city project such highly insecure subdivisions in cities such as Tijuana, Nogales and Ciudad Juárez. In the rest of the text, the analysis is channeled to inland cities such as Mérida, Hermosillo, Mazatlan and Culiacan, tracing the history of these divisions, and their consequences, that arouse the imagination and proposing an evaluation model for this social phenomenon.
