Summary:

Architect Josué Smith Solar (1867-1938) represents the evolution of Chilean architecture and urban design into modernism practiced between the 19th and 20th centuries. Smith Solar spent his professional formation in the United States and his designs are strongly influenced by the French styles in fashion at the time in the United States. He later worked in association with his son José Smith Miller and his architecture becomes more austere and modernist designs. Some of his early projects include: Club Hípico (1923) -inspired in the Racetrack Longchamp in Paris, beach residential resorts in Zapallar, Papudo and Las Cruces, now considered unique examples of Tudor, Bavarian and English palaces. In Santiago he contributed to the formation of the Barrio Cívico, remodeling the south facade of La Moneda (late 1920's), the Ministerio de Hacienda (1929) and the former Hotel Carrera (1937), projects he designed along with his son.
