Bennett, David, 1948-
Skyscrapers : form & function.
New York Simon & Schuster ©1995.
120 pages illustrations (chiefly color) 32 cm
If this entire volume were as slickly pretty and travel-brochure trite as the opening chapter, 'A Day in the Life of a Skyscraper,' a facile look at Chicago's Sears Tower, the world's tallest, this book wouldn't have made it into this 'recommended only' review journal, but both Bennett's writing and the accompanying illustrations improve rapidly. Interestingly enough, this deepening of the book's intent and content coincides with a look at the inner workings of skyscrapers. Bennett ends up presenting a concise and informative history of the evolution of the skyscraper, accompanied by detailed photographs and illuminating schematics. He concentrates on distinctive and innovative structures, devoting an entire section to the conceptualization and construction of British architect Norman Foster's pioneering Hong Kong Bank, which was 'designed more like a bridge than a traditional building.' - Donna Seaman--BL 10/15/1995.
