L'architecture en terre du Mali est mondialement connue et constitue une partie importante de l'identité culturelle de la population locale. En général, l'intérêt international s'oriente vers les grands centres comme Djenné, Gao et Tombouctou. Cependant, le patrimoine architectural du Mali ne se limite pas qu'à ces villes, mais peut également se voir dans un arrière-pays beaucoup plus vaste. Dans les villages bozo et somono de la région du Delta intérieur du Niger les saho peuvent être qualifiés de -joyaux - de cette architecture. Les monumentales maisons communautaires et de socialisation des jeunes, le plus souvent joliment décorées, représentent et accentuent l'identité et la personnalité des groupes de garçons de quartier vers le monde extérieur. L'architecture en terre offre un cadre de vie agréable et durable, mais elle est également vulnérable. Un projet international de restauration a été mis en oeuvre. Au total onze saho dans trois villages du voisinage immédiat de Djenné ont été réhabilités, restaurés et restitués à leur ancienne gloire.
