Le nom de l'ingénieur suisse Robert Maillart (1872-1940) reste attaché à une série de ponts en béton armé. Son oeuvre, reconnue par des historiens comme Sigfried Giedion ou des architectes comme Max Bill, illustre ce qu'on appelle la "pensée constructive». Ce livre inscrit son parcours dans le contexte du "premier béton armé», met en relief l'originalité de ses procédés, analyse quelques-unes de ses oeuvres majeures et confronte sa "culture constructive» à celle de plusieurs ingénieurs contemporains, Eugène Freyssinet, Pier Luigi Nervi et Eduardo Torroja.
