Summary:

Die Vielfalt der Landschaft und die bewegte Vergangenheit hat Montenegro eine Vielzahl architektonischen Stilrichtungen aufgeprägt. Lange Zeit stand es unter osmanischer Herrschaft. Perast zählt zu den schönsten Barockstädten an der Adria, hier oder auch in der Altstadt von Budva waren die Venezianier am Werk. In sozialistischer Zeit entstanden große Wohnblöcke, und die moderne Architektur begann sich erst in den späten 1990er Jahren zu etablieren. Spätestens da erfasste das Land ein Bauboom, der seit der Unabhängigkeit 2006 noch zugenommen hat. Mehr und mehr rücken beim Bauen ökologische und kontextuelle Aspekte in den Vordergrund; der Hauptwirtschaftszweig der gebirgigen Balkanrepublik--der Tourismus--öffnet sich nachhaltigen Projekten. Zur Zeit baut z.B. der österreichische Architekt Daniel Fügenschuh in der Hauptstadt Podgorica u.a. das UN Eco Building, das erste gänzlich umweltfreundliche UN-Hauptquartier der Welt.
