Summary:

A complete and detailed history of the building of the Ministrio da Educaçao e Saúde Pública "MES" (Ministry of Public Education and Health, now the Ministry of Education, Health and Culture) also known as the Capanema Palace, studied from its conception, aspects, technical characteristics and particularities, structures, functions and its artistic and aesthetic spaces. The contradictory political history of the building started when architect Le'Corbusier, a leftist as many of the European modernist architects, was invited by the government of Dictator Getulio Vargas to construct a modern public building as part of the foundation of Brazil's "Estado Novo". Le'Corbusier designed an innovative building where his audacious and creative designs included concrete walls that allowed full glass walls controlled and adjustable by Corbusian sun-shades (brises-soleil) through a system (the first of its kind in the world), tropical gardens designed by the great landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, interior decoration by noted architect Oscar Niemeyer, murals made in the Portuguese tradition of blue and white ceramic tiles in the outside walls and large wall paintings by Cndido Portinari in the inside, public sculptures by Celso Antonio, along with commissioned works of other Brazilian artists. The main building of MES was the first modernist public building in the Americas, and the largest of anything Le'Corbusier had built until then.
