De gevierde Nederlandse architect en stedenbouwkundige Cornelis van Eesteren is vooral bekend door zijn werk voor het Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan (AUP) voor Amsterdam, dat in 1934 tot stand kwam en na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd uitgevoerd, en door zijn rol als voorzitter van het Internationaal Congres van de Moderne Architectuur (CIAM), van 1930 tot 1947. Hij was een pionier en een zeer invloedrijke figuur binnen het zogeheten modernistisch urbanisme. Tijdens zijn minder bekende, vormende jaren in de jaren twintig, een zeer opwindende periode in de culturele geschiedenis van de twintigste eeuw, was de nieuwsgierige en getalenteerde jongeman echter steeds op het juiste moment op de juiste plek aanwezig. Hij bezocht het Bauhaus in Weimar, waar hij onder meer Walter Gropius, El Lissitzky en Theo van Doesburg ontmoette.
