"Au cours des vingt dernières années de sa carrière, Le Corbusier expérimente une nouvelle esthétique qui va fortement marquer ses œuvres. Dans cette démarche, sa volonté vise à s'écarter de tout académisme, fut-il moderne, en utilisant la forme comme instrument critique pour inventer une écriture novatrice que les commentateurs ne vont pas tarder à désigner du nom de "brutalisme". Cette orientation qu'il définit comme la recherche d'une "synthèse des arts" associe autour de l'architecture l'ensemble des arts majeurs : peinture, sculpture, tapisserie, émaux, dessins ...
