Acteur du mouvement radical italien, du groupe Alchimia puis de Memphis, il a oeuvré à libérer le design de la tyrannie de l'objet industriel et du standard, pour le doter de pouvoirs de résonance et d'évocation. Il ouvre ainsi la voie vers la multiplicité des formes que revêt aujourd'hui le design. La ville est son champ d'observation privilégié et l'humain, sa première préoccupation.
