Summary:

"Contemporary Architecture I offes [sic] a genetical survey of 19th Century technical and eclectic architecture which flourished under the liberal bourgeois in the capitalist world, as well as the material and spirit behind these developments. The term 'eclecticism' is discussed in its different forms such as romanticism, classicism, academism, 'art for art's sake', and the influence from archeology; all expressed in the common architectural language of formalism and mannerism. The book also gives a picture of eclecticism's development and spread in France, England, Germany, and America. Short biographies of the lives and works of the major representatives of eclecticism are also included such as Schinkels, Sempers, Viollet-le-Duc and Cockerell. The picture of the 19th Century is completed with discussions of biedermeyer, applied art, and their influence on the architectural work of Carlyle, Ruskin, and Morris. Apart from the development of eclectic architecture the author deals with engineering and technical architecture and the major representatives in its development. The new directions of secession, Jugend-style, futurism, cubism, neo-plasticism, expressionism, purism, functionalism (utilitarism, objectivism), sachlihkeit, and constructivism (suprematism) are discussed in order to illustrate the development of contemporary architectural thought and conception. In this book the author also deals with two subjects important to an understanding of contemporary architecture: 'Contemporary Non-ornamental Architecture' nad [sic] 'Movements in Art and Their Influence on the Development of Architectural Thought'. The conclusion reviews the basic themes of the book and also the newest waves in architectural thought, pointing out that architecture as we know it today has a well developed history."--Page [286]
