Title & Author:

Ruins of Athens : with remains and other valuable antiquities in Greece.

Publication:

London : For Robert Sayer, 1759.

Description:

[2], ii, 31, [1] pages, etch. frontis., 26 etch. plates ; 56.8 cm (2)̲

Notes:
An abridgement and translation of Ruines des plus beaux monumens de la Grèce (1758; No. 1875). The 'Historical Account Of Athens' is taken from Sir George Wheler's Journey into Greece (1682).
: This is the first English version of Le Roy's treatise, originally published in Paris in 1758 (No. 1875). The anonymous translation is almost a new work, being a series of extracts from Le Roy, freely translated and strung together, with 'An Historical Account of Athens' drawn from Sir George Wheler's Journey into Greece (1682). The plates are also based on those in Le Roy's treatise, but in a reduced and rearranged form, designed to limit the number of coppers needed to print the book and, therefore, the cost (see Plates above). The 'Preface.' makes much play of the cheapness of the work, compared with the French original. The book was published in June 1759 at £1.10s. in sheets and £2.0s. bound (see GM, 1759, p.285). The work seems to have received limited circulation, and ESTC only records the present (imperfect) copy in the British Isles; however, as noted by Harris, a complete copy is housed in the British Museum Department of Prints and Drawings (shelfmark 242 c.14). For further details see Harris (p. 289-290).
