Summary:

"Montreal is home to four urban universities: Concordia University, McGill University, Université de Montréal, and Université de Québec à Montréal. Against this backdrop, the Canadian Centre for Architecture's 2013 Power Corporation of Canada Awards project explores the ways in which Montreal's universities have adopted the role of urban developer. This is done through a comparative analysis of the four campuses' historical growth and development within the city. Often framed within the boundaries of 'urban renewal' and 'economic revitalization,' mega-projects have become the developmental strategy of Montreal's universities. We compare the official project promises to the city with some community responses. The pressures of campus expansion in dense and built up environments raise important questions about contested lands, diverse communities' right to the city, and ultimately, the University's place in the city."
