Summary:

"Nunatsiavut, an Inuit region of Canada that has been self-governing since 2005, has a distinct artistic output in the Canadian art world and circumpolar Inuit art." The southernmost Inuit population in the world, the coastal people of Canada Nunatsiavut has always straddled the treeline, and Inuit artists and artisans from Nunatsiavut have had access to a diverse arctic and subarctic flora and fauna, from which they have created works of surprising variety. Traditionally they have used stone and wood for carving, fur, leather and seal skin for furniture and marine grasses for wickerwork, as well as wool, metal, fabric, beads and paper, and more recently they have worked with techniques found in contemporary art, such as painting, drawing, engraving, photography, video and ceramics, without neglecting traditional materials, used in an innovative and unusual way. SakKijâjuk: Nunatsiavut Art and Crafts is the first major publication on Labrador Inuit art. Written to accompany a major traveling exhibition designed by The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery, St. John's Division, the book includes more than 80 works by 45 artists, a presentation of them, and a background essay on the art of painting. Nunatsiavut signed by Commissioner Heather Igloliorte. SakKijâjuk ("being visible" - taking his place - in the Nunatsiavut Inuktitut dialect) is a unique opportunity for readers, collectors, art historians and art lovers from both the South and the North to create a special relationship with the world of different, innovative and always striking work of contemporary Inuit artists and artisans from Nunatsiavut.
