Summary:

The art of copper-plate engraving and printing played an important role in 16th-century Rome. This book collects images from various private collections to present a cross-section of the first great period of Roman graphic production in the 16th century. It includes 355 engravings, dating from 1500 to 1605, and coming in large part from two prestigious workshops in Rome: that of Antonio Salamanca and that of Antonio Lafrery. The engravings in this book are divided into three large sections. The first includes engravings based on the works of the great Renaissance artists; the second is dedicated to the ruins of ancient Rome; and the third includes images of the "modern Rome" of the 16th century. Italian translation is given of the Latin texts that accompany the images, because often these captions are essential keys to the interpretation of the images.
