"Architecte et designer, Charles Percier ( 1764-1838 ), l'un des principaux artistes européens de son époque, s'est dédié avec passion à l'enseignement. Accueillant officiellement plus d'une centaine d'élèves dans son atelier, dont seize furent Prix de Rome, sept membres de l'Institut et parmi lesquels beaucoup devinrent à leurs tours professeurs, sa contribution à l'origine de la section architecture de l'École des beaux-arts de Paris fut déterminante. Mais au-delà de ce rôle institutionnel, l'abondante production de ceux qu'il a formés apparaît surtout comme une continuation et un développement de son oeuvre, miroir fidèle ou déformant de ses propres inclinations.
