Summary:

"Tunnels, footbridges, escalators, urban cable cars, pathways -- passages of all kinds -- are essential links in the urban fabric and a source of urban character. Requiring little investment, they should be a natural part of any large development project, since they can repair the fractures wrought by transit infrastructures and 20th-Century zoning practices. This volume is the outcome of a collective effort led by IVM, with experts and partner cities from many countries. It is also the catalog of an exhibition staged in Paris in May 2016. It presents more than 150 contemporary examples and analyzes passages in their historical, spatial, social, and sensory dimensions, as well as in relation to emerging mobilities and citizen aspirations. It concludes with a call for innovation -- the Manifesto for the Passage"--Back cover.
