Summary:
"If...Then : Architectural Speculation" is the sixth in an annual series of publications featuring work by talented architects selected by The Architectural League of New York's Young Architects Competition jury. This year, entrants were asked to explore the process of architectural speculation: the act of imagination that precedes every work, projecting future events in a space that does not yet exist. The winners of the competition - Fernando Romero; Tobias Lundquist; Anthony Piermarini and Hansy L. Better Barraza; Keith Mitnick, Mireille Roddier, and Stewart Hicks; Tom Wiscombe; and Gail Peter Borden - take on this challenge and creatively address the social and political assumptions surrounding architectural production through a rethinking of site, program, form, technology, and materials.

Summary:
The Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers is an annual competition, series of lectures, exhibition, and publication organized by The Architectural League of New York. For more than thirty years, the League Prize has recognized outstanding and provocative work by up-and-coming North American architects and designers. The 2018 competition theme, Objective, suggested that the topic "implies an action" and that "how we act, what our actions achieve, and how we argue for a design speak to our values as a discipline and as a society." The winners'' work exemplifies the diverse ways young architects and designers are pursuing multiple "objectives," from projects that insightfully address social, economic, and political agendas to material and structural experimentation that inspires innovative design at every scale. Young Architects 20: Objective presents the work of the six winners of the 2018 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers competition.

Summary:
Architecture has become an increasingly multidisciplinary profession, where concepts, techniques, and materials are readily shared with other disciplines, and the many ways an architect can define and address a design problem has redefined the role of the architect. "Situating" implies a wide-ranging approach to all phases of design, creating a more dynamic understanding of site and open-ended work that both acknowledges existing conditions and allows for mutability and change over time. In "Young architects 7: situating", young architects were asked to broaden the concept of "siting" to include the "situating" of an architectural problem. The winners of the competition—Greg Kochanowski, ROEWU Architecture, Lateral Architecture, Dan Hisel Design, LinOldham Office, and Interboro—responded to these questions with answers as distinct as they are creative.
