Summary:
"New Living” (Das Neue Wohnen) was the title of an exceptional architectural propaganda film created in 1930 by German avant-garde artist and filmmaker Hans Richter. It show-cased exemplary modernist buildings and furniture – some of which were on view shortly afterwards in the prestigious exhibitions "The International Style” – and contrasted them with impractical, unhygienic living spaces. The visual diversity of "New Living”, and its use of an experimental montage technique, pioneered a radical new method of portraying architecture on celluloid. This publication includes detailed sequences from the New Living film, as well as numerous documents that illustrate the new style of architectural modernism. Previously priced at $96.00.

Summary:
Situated on the shore of the Lake Zurich, Le Corbusier's exhibition pavilion is his last realised design. Based on his Modulor proportional system and at the scale of a single-family home, it demonstrates the potential of prefabricated elements to form a perfect space for art and design. Commissioned in 1960 by Heidi Weber, Zurich-based gallery owner and patron of Le Corbusier the visual artist, this structure in steel and glass represents pivotal aspects of his architectural philosophy and also points to the future. Architects Silvio Schmed and Arthur Ruegg have carefully restored the Pavillon Le Corbusier to its original state, including the reconstruction of missing pieces of furniture and luminaires. This book documents their research and the restored building, featuring previously unpublished historic photographs and documents alongside newly commissioned images by Georg Aerni.

Summary:
2010 marked the 50th anniversary of Brazil's capital Brasilia. Architects Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer designed what has become one of the most studied urban planning project. Niemeyer's Cathedral, his building for the National Congress and the city's 707-ft television tower are icons of modern architecture. The entire city, marked by its cross-shaped layout and vast open spaces, was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. The author of this publication visited Brasilia's vast building sites for the first time in 1958. He returned many times over the years, documenting with his camera growth and further development of this built Utopia. Besides documenting the buildings in various stages of completion, Burri took portraits of Niemeyer and his workers and photographed Brasilia's street scenes and people and aerial views of the city's first slums. His images capture the strong sense of a new era and a vibrant atmosphere of hard work and strain; they reflect the huge dimensions of the landscape and the great scale of this project and its ambition to design and build a new capital. This book presents a large selection from hundreds of colour and black-and-white photographs, the majority of them published in this book for the first time.

Summary:
For the first time, the development of interiors and furniture in Switzerland from the end of the nineteenth century to the present day have been surveyed and documented. Following introductory essays by Lucius Burckhardt and Stanislaus von Moos, both experts in design research, there are seven main chapters each focussing on a period of 15 years; these are complemented by detailed information on those masterpieces which can be considered to define the epoch. Some 20 representative interiors reveal the significant changes which have taken place in living space in the 20th century. A fully illustrated catalogue of over 300 objects from furniture to ceramics and household objects and around 150 biographies conclude the publication. Much of the information was previously inaccessible and this volume contains invaluable details regarding the origins and the production of the objects. The book is a fascinating compendium of the great classics in Swiss design, with rare early works as well as new pieces. A large part of the material has been photographed especially for this publication and the model furnished interiors have been drawn to the same scale.

Summary:

In 1962 the young photographer René Burri, on the staff of the renowned photo agency MAGNUM, and known for his reportage and portraits, presented the architect, Le Corbusier, with a fold-out book, made with his own hands, containing photographs, dating back to 1953, that he had taken of the architect in various situations. The photographs it contains show Corbusier at the height of his creativity – in conversation, alone in his studio, at the construction site. They also convey the unmistakable atmosphere of his designs. This scrupulous facsimile reproduction comes with a text by René Burri and commentaries by the Corbusier connoisseur and editor Arthur Rüegg.
