This issue explores two themes, each through five recent projects. The terms culture and city both contain an element of opposition against two words that are often mistaken as their synonyms: civilisation and urbanisation. In this sense, culture can be considered a strategy of resistance. Recent examples that reflect this trend are SANAA’s Tsuruoka Cultural Hall, Caixa(...)

This issue explores two themes, each through five recent projects. The terms culture and city both contain an element of opposition against two words that are often mistaken as their synonyms: civilisation and urbanisation. In this sense, culture can be considered a strategy of resistance. Recent examples that reflect this trend are SANAA’s Tsuruoka Cultural Hall, Caixa Forum Sevilla by Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra, and La Seine Music Hall by Shigeru Ban. Secondly, the school as social playground is examined in the Skovbakke School by CEBRA, German School Madrid by Grüntuch Ernst Architects, and the Copenhagen International School Nordhavn by C.F. Summary:
The taste for industrial aesthetics, just one of many reasons for the popularity of industrial conversions today, saw its beginnings during the age of post-war modernism, popularised by architects such as Le Corbusier, Gropius, and Mies van der Rohe. Yet the trend to rethink industrial structures also signals the imbalance of production and consumption that has arisen since the 1970s. Currently, however, rehabilitation initiatives are bringing production back to the city through projects like the thirteen examples in this special issue. Included are the Baltic Station Market by KOKO architects, Zeitz MOCAA by Heatherwick Studio, Malmö Market Hall by Wingårdh, and The Silo by COBE.

Summary:
From follies in parks to hosting events in prestigious locations and buildings, pavilions offer a great opportunity for architects to reflect upon the notion of space, visitor experience, and the role of the architectural components in the project as a whole. A selection of projects explores the relationships between pavilions and their contexts, and illustrates how the typology is evolving, becoming more dynamic, flexible, and lighter. Included are the Naoshima Port Terminal by SANAA, Kéré Architecture’s 2017 Serpentine Pavilion, and the Mpavilion 2017 by OMA. Additionally, this edition looks at special projects that reflect the blurring of boundaries between working and living in the digital era.

Summary:
This issue introduces the most recent works by three Korean architects: Seung H-Sang, Byoungsoo Cho, and Heesoo Kwak. Four critics travelled across Korea to visit three buildings and interview the architects in person. Also featured are reviews of five communal buildings that are intended to be shared and enjoyed by their communities. Each is set in a tranquil location and has its own personality. Finally, the issue investigates the hybrid nature of large community complex buildings, vertical towns that provide one-stop service systems. Clearly, with the acceleration of urbanisation, the position of architects in small rural towns versus mega-cities tends to differ greatly.
