Summary:
After arriving in New York in 1938, Austrian photographer Lisette Model quickly found stunning early success. Her photographs graced the pages of renowned magazines and were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art. Their frank portrayals of ordinary Americans, captured in bars and restaurants, on the beach and in the streets, revolutionised the world of photography. Yet by 1950, Model had all but ceased to circulate her images, devoting herself instead to teaching a new generation of photographers, including Diane Arbus and Rosalind Fox Solomon. She gained the reputation, scandalous in business-like New York, of being ''difficult''. In this illustrated essay, Duncan Forbes offers a new interpretation of Model's photography and biography, asking whether the artist's rebelliousness is not in fact the key to understanding her remarkable life and work.

"The Japanese photobook", 1912–1990 illustrates the development of photography as seen in photo publications in Japan--from the early influence of European and American pictorialism, the German Bauhaus and imperial military propaganda to the complete collapse and destruction of the country in 1945. Then followed a new beginning: with the unique self-determination of a young generation of photographers and visual artists highlighted by the Provoke style--an experimental Japanese photography magazine that had a profound effect on the medium in the 1970s and ‘80s--as well as protest and war documentation of the late 1950s to the early ‘70s, the signature Japanese photobook, as we have come to know it, was born.

''The tension implicit in any photograph is the tension between an inert, black-and-white, two-dimensional object, and an event that actually existed in the phenomenal world. A successful photograph mediates, though never completely resolves that tension.'' Summary:
''The tension implicit in any photograph is the tension between an inert, black-and-white, two-dimensional object, and an event that actually existed in the phenomenal world. A successful photograph mediates, though never completely resolves that tension.'' In 1972, as his career was beginning to take off, Lewis Baltz conducted a revealing interview, his first considered statement about photography. Never published, the interview has recently resurfaced, and is printed here for the first time. In an increasingly sardonic exchange Baltz describes the character of his practice, articulates his position within and against the world of photography, and comments on his intellectual heritage and professional ambition. A penetrating exploration of the character of his medium, Baltz’s artistry and mercurial presence are strikingly laid bare.

Summary:
The landscape photographs of Michael Reisch show nature as spookily pristine and oddly frozen. Upon closer inspection, the viewer senses that something is amiss. These landscapes are indeed based on existing places, but Reisch has processed his images digitally, and arrived at a visual effect that both fascinates and disquiets in its airless perfection.
