Le 6 février 1740, fut inaugurée à Saint-Pétersbourg la Maison de Glace d'un architecte décapité quatre mois plus tard pour célébrer le mariage d'une effrayante Kalmouke avec Mickaïl Alexeïevitch Golitzyne, le prince-boufon de l'impératrice Anna Ivanovna Golitzyne (1693-1740). Férue de monstres de foire, d'horoscopes et d'animaux exotiques, elle-même collectionneuse de nains, la tsarine supervisa l'érection du palais, le cortège nuptial et son défilé ethnographique. Rédigé après l'un des hivers les plus froids jamais enregistré et fort d'une fascination pour la nature physique du matériau et l'expérimentation scientifique, le traité savant de George Wolfgang Kraft (1701-1754) relate ce chantier pour le moins inhabituel.
