La localisation extraordinaire de l'entrée de cette caverne ornée, à 37 mètres sous les eaux, est due à la montée du niveau de la mer après la fin de la dernière glaciation. L'art conservé se trouve dans les salles supérieures restées hors d'eau. Un humain et 177 animaux ont été répertoriés, ainsi que plus de 200 signes géométriques de formes diverses, 65 mains négatives, et 8 représentations de sexes. Les sols sont jonchés de charbons, restes de torches ou de feux allumés, qui servaient aux dessins. Les vingt-quatre dates obtenues par la méthode du radiocarbone ont montré que la caverne avait d’abord été fréquentée il y a 27 000 ans, puis il y a 19 000 ans. Compte tenu de l’étendue des zones ennoyées et du nombre des représentations découvertes dans les salles préservées, il est certain qu’à l’origine Cosquer était l’une des grottes ornées les plus importantes d’Europe, seulement comparable à Chauvet et à Lascaux.
