Summary:
Because filming has long been restricted in Nigeria, few images of Lagos exist. Based on research by The Harvard Project on the City under the direction of Rem Koolhaas, this DVD represents a unique engagement with a hardly documented city, capturing multiple perspectives of a volatile moment in its evolution. In 2002, Bregtje van der Haak, in cooperation with architect Rem Koolhaas and The Harvard Project on the City made "Lagos/Koolhaas", a documentary on self-organization and urbanization in Nigeria. As a sequel to the documentary, Bregtje van der Haak together with designer Silke Wawro, developed the DVD "Lagos wide & close, an interactive journey into an exploding city". The DVD contains an interactive video documentary (60'), edited from 55 hours of unused material that brings the viewer closer to the explosively growing megalopolis Lagos. With bus driver Olawole Busayo, the viewer moves through the city and has a choice of a distant ('wide') or an involved ('close') perspective, at any random moment in the documentary.

World of giving

Summary:
The last decade was largely defined by consumption and greed. An untold story, however, is the rise in benevolent giving seen in institutional, public and private sectors. Summary:
The last decade was largely defined by consumption and greed. An untold story, however, is the rise in benevolent giving seen in institutional, public and private sectors. Such characteristics as altruism and duty are now as influential as self-interest. The geography of aid has also broadened; networks of NGOs now supplement philanthropy and the global operations of official channels. It has become a crucial counterpart of authorized programs; agencies that provide vital services rely on contributions to augment official doctrines. Yet, the current recession threatens to limit support, diminishing aid at this critical moment when distress is increasing. A new culture of giving that includes volunteering and action, coupled with accumulated expertise may enable imminent needs to be met. The Gift Economy presents aid's history as an index of past and current relationships, indicating how its future promises a significant global role.

Summary:
In 1996-97, Harvard's graduate students studied China's Pearl River Delta (PRD), a cluster of five cities with a population of twelve million that will probably reach thirty-six million by the year 2020. The establishment in the PRD of Special Economic Zones - "laboratories for the contained unleashing of capitalism" - has hastened an unprecedented experiment in urbanization on an astonishingly large scale. "Great Leap Forward" contains essays that explore, in a theoretical and statistical context, the results of this rapid modernization, which has produced an entirely new urban substance.

Volume 13 Ambition
$38.95
(available to order)
Summary:
Our field, and perhaps every field, is defined by ambition. To know ourselves we have to know ambition. But ambition is far from simple. It is never straightforward, never the singular drive it appears to be. Rather, it is a set of interacting forces in which often the means are mistaken for ends. This issue of Volume on Ambition offers a preliminary map of what has(...)

This issue of Volume on Ambition offers a preliminary map of what has become a landscape of misguided purpose.
