"The Arcades Project" (1927–40), the monumental unfinished work of cultural criticism by Walter Benjamin, is the German philosopher’s effort to comprehend urban modernity through the 19th-century Parisian shopping arcade. "The Arcades: contemporary art and Walter Benjamin" combines artworks with archival materials and poetic interventions to form an original, multifaceted response to this collagelike cultural text. Jens Hoffmann astutely pairs works by thirty-six well-known and emerging artists, including Lee Friedlander, Andreas Gursky, Pierre Huyghe, and Cindy Sherman, with the thirty-six “Convolutes,” or themes, in Benjamin’s text. Bound into the main volume is a graphic novelette, from the imagination of Vito Manolo Roma, of Benjamin’s dream the night before he committed suicide while fleeing the Nazis. Scholarly essays by Hoffmann and Caroline A. Jones, texts selected by the poet Kenneth Goldsmith, reproductions of Benjamin’s handwritten notes, and a list of the main Paris arcades discussed by him round out this extraordinary publication.

Summary:
The modernist parks and gardens of Brazilian landscape architect and garden designer Roberto Burle Marx (1909–1994) earned him awards, widespread acclaim, and international fame. Over a 60-year career, he designed more than 2,000 gardens worldwide, the most famous of which are those he created in collaboration with the architect Oscar Niemeyer for Brasília. Although he is best known for his landscape work, Burle Marx was a prolific artist in a variety of media, and his larger body of work—which includes paintings, drawings, tile mosaics, sculpture, textile design, jewelry, theater costumes, and more—is critical to understanding his importance as a modernist. An avid horticulturalist, he was among the first to denounce deforestation in the Amazon region; he also discovered over thirty species of Brazilian flora, which bear his name.

Other sites emerged for the generation of art, leading to the idea of "post-studio practice." But the studio never went away; it was continually reinvented in response to new realities. This collection, expanding on current critical interest in issues of production and situation, looks at the evolution of studio - and "post-studio" - practice over the last half century. In recent decades many artists have turned their studios into offices from which they organize a multiplicity of operations and interactions. Others use the studio as a quasi-exhibition space, or work on a laptop computer - mobile, flexible, and ready to follow the next commission.

This volume--the first on the artist in many years--surveys the recent abstractions of the much-admired San Francisco painter Clare Rojas (born 1976). Known for her association with a generation of artists that became internationally prominent through the exhibition ''Beautiful Losers'', Rojas in her earlier paintings drew from various Russian and Eastern European folkloric subjects. While the figures have been removed from this more recent body of work, it is not hard to see their enduring impact on Rojas’ art: with their lively angularity and bold chromaticism, these paintings are equally evocative of folk art and the formalist reductions of key modernist abstract artists such as Alexander Calder, Matisse, Malevich or Ellsworth Kelly. Accompanying these works is an essay by the curator and Deputy Director of the Jewish Museum, Jens Hoffmann, and a poem by David Whyte.
