The images not only show final design decisions, but also chart the changes in costumes as the project unfolded, and the ways in which Dzama’s conception of the characters in the ballet evolved. The book closes with a conversation between Dzama and Peck in which choreographer and artist discuss their collaborative process, and the important role of renowned composer Dessner in bringing the project to life. Also included is a poster made specifically for this book by the artist.

This publication provides a kind of sketchbook companion or dossier on the making of his latest film, A Game of Chess . This work draws on the importance of chess for the early twentieth-century avant-garde (Man Ray, Duchamp, Picabia) and the game's curious overlap with dance, in films and ballets by René Clair and - of especial significance for Dzama - Oskar Schlemmer, whose 1922 Triadic Ballet included puppet-like masked figures performing on a checkered surface. In Dzama's film, characters based on chess pieces, clad in costumes made from papier-mâché, plaster and fiberglass and wearing elaborate masks, dance across a checkered board to engage their opponents in fatal skirmishes. Distinctions between reality and fiction collapse as both costumed and “real-life” characters in the film are killed. The filming and the creation of the costumes for A Game of Chess were carried out in Guadalajara, Mexico, and the influence of local crafts and religious traditions can also be felt throughout this body of work. Published on the occasion of Dzama's sixth solo exhibition at David Zwirner, this artist's book is packed with full-bleed drawings, sculptures, dioramas and film and production stills that give vivid testimony to the craft and thoroughness of his immensely popular art.

Over the past few years Marcel Dzama's drawings have been attracting considerable attention. His odd mutant figures, with their ambiguous relationship to other figures, objects and situations, are infused with a radiant innocence and an idiosyncratic sense of humour far removed from other strategies that have fueled artmaking over the past decade. In this most comprehensive publication on Dzama's work to date, Patten examines the seminal evolution of Dzama's idiosyncratic approach to drawing between 1996 and 2001. Referring to Mikhail Bakhtin's concept of grotesque humour and the carnivalesque, he demonstrates how each drawing is an amalgam of allusions to 20th century popular culture. With an introduction by Wayne Baerwaldt, director of the Power Plant. Originally from Winnipeg, Marcel Dzama has had numerous solo exhibitions, notably at the Los Angeles Invitational Biennial, Richard Heller Gallery of Santa Monica and Sies + Hoke of Dusseldorf.
