L'ouvrage "Paysages contemporains" propose une analyse approfondie et inédite du paysagisme aujourd'hui. Au cours des dix dernières années, la création architecturale du XXe siècle, à la fois urbaine et rurale, s'est enrichie des préoccupations propres au XXIe siècle liées aux conséquences des changements écologiques et climatiques sur notre environnement naturel. Cette perspective remet en cause l'ordre des priorités dans le domaine de la conception du paysage. Historiquement, les paysagistes ont toujours collaboré ; avec les architectes et les ingénieurs. Plus récemment, ce sont les œuvres et installations des artistes et sculpteur du Land Art qui ont enrichi les projets contemporains. Paysages contemporains présente des créations récent de Bernard Lassus, Lawrence Halprin, George Hargreav Associates, Itsuko Hasegawa, Martha Schwartz, Colvin & Moggridge, Peter Latz & Partners, entre autres, ainsi ; que celles de concepteurs plus jeunes mais reconnus comme Danadjieva & Koenig Associates, Mikyoung Kim,: Gross Max, Jacqueline Osty, Bat Figueras et Toru Mitani. L'auteur explique également dans quelle mesure les nouvelles données environnementales ont permis de repenser les différentes pratiques du XXIe siècle, à travers les œuvres d'architectes aussi éminents que Daniel Libeskind (avec Lützow 7), Juhani Pallasmaa, Hans Hollein, Ernric Miralles, Chris Wilkinson ou Glenn Murcutt. Dans son introduction, Michael Spens interroge les références historiques et modernistes ; il montre que les réalisations contemporaines s'inspirent souvent d'une documentation historique plaçant l'homme dans son environnement à travers des peintures, des dessins, certains sujets majeurs mais aussi la nature elle-même. Il défini quatre catégories clés de la conception du paysage, divisant l'ouvrage en autant de chapitres : les parcs, l'architecture comme paysage, les jardins paysagers, et les interventions urbaines. Dans chaque chapitre, des études de cas illustrées de projets tels que les jardins botaniques de Barcelone, le jardin ETA Hoffmann du Musée juif de Berlin et la promenade plantée sur le Viaduc des arts à Paris, tous réalisés depuis 1990, ouvrent le débat sur les critères du paysagisme à travers les divers enjeux de l'urbanisme.
