Summary:
The Wiener Werkstätte, founded in Vienna in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, became the international trademark for art as well as arts-and-crafts in the twentieth century. The history of the Wiener Werkstätte is told in this volume, which features historic photographs (some of them published for the first time here), documents and original texts selected by experts from the MAK (where the Wiener Werkstätte archives have been housed since 1955). Full-page illustrations feature outstanding examples of Wiener Werkstätte objects, covering architecture, furniture, ceramics, glass, books, posters, postcards, carpets, jewelry, fashion and print design. The book also focuses on the innovative "total concept" used by this avant-garde association to establish an early "consumer culture," since the Werkstätte was one of the first organizations to develop a corporate identity that followed a product through every stage from concept and development to marketing.

Summary:
When the property to the south of Rudolph M. Schindler’s historic house and studio on Kings Road in Los Angeles was sold to the developer of a 3-story, 18-unit condominium complex, a question urgently emerged: How does one build next to the Schindler House? To incite the exchange of ideas on the Schindler House problem, the MAK Center at the Schindler House initiated an architectural invitational in which architects were asked to envision a companion to Schindler’s masterwork. Juried by a distinguished international panel, entries were solicited from a roster of both established and young architects. Proposals were contributed by architect teams COOP HIMMEL(B)LAU, Vienna, Christophe Cornubert, PUSH, Los Angeles, Eichinger oder Knechtl, Vienna, Peter Eisenman, New York, Andrea Lenardin-Madden, Los Angeles, Durfee/Regn, Los Angeles, Günther Domenig, Graz, Eric Owen Moss, Los Angeles, Dominique Perrault, Paris, Odile Decq + Benoît Cornette, Paris, Zaha Hadid, London, Georg Driendl, Vienna, Michael Rotondi, Los Angeles, Klaus Stattmann, Vienna, Sandrine von Klot, Vienna, Lebbeus Woods, New York, Bernhard Sommer, Vienna, Mark Mack, Los Angeles, Umbrella Organization, Los Angeles, and The Next Enterprise, Vienna. "Architectural Resistance: Contemporary Architects Face Schindler Today" presents each of their 20 proposals in the context of a discussion about architecture, urban change, site, and historic preservation.

Summary:
While lying on the beach in Nice one day, eighteen-year-old Yves Klein and his friends decided to divide the world up among themselves. Klein (1928-1962) chose the air, the cloudless sky. He remained fascinated with the element and its immaterial quality throughout his life. In the late fifties, he and the German architect Werner Ruhnau developed plans for an "architecture of air" composed of walls and roofs of air-as represented, for example, in the idea of the "Temple of the Elements" with fountains of water and fire and a café protected against the rain only by air currents. Klein associated this idea with a philosophy of optimism devoted to the creation of a paradise on earth, a Garden of Eden in which human beings would be free to pursue their own interests. The publication is the first book devoted exclusively to this aspect of Yves Klein's art. It includes reproductions of drawings and other works as well as essays and lectures on the subject. Additional articles by other authors emphasize the significance of Klein's work to the theme of the immaterial.

Summary:
This illustrated volume offers a comprehensive overview of the work of Iraqi architect Hadid from her earliest works realized in 1979 to her most recent projects. "Zaha Hadid: Architecture" is published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at the MAK in Vienna. The book is the first to document the artist´s newest projects and presents an extensive overview over her oeuvre. It contains numerous color illustrations of designs, models and as yet mostly unpublished paintings by Hadid as well as photographs of buildings realised and under construction. Includes texts by Andreas Ruby and Patrik Schuhmacher. shedding profound light onto the architect´s oeuvre. Another special feature is the documentation of the installation "Ice-Storm" especially developed for the MAK exhibition, a "space experiment" with a surface area of 300 m2, a weight of eight tons and height of seven metres, providing the audience with a possibility for an active approach to Hadid´s radically new language of form and space.

Summary:
One of the leading representatives of Minimalism, Donald Judd's "specific objects," made of steel, wood, aluminum, and Plexiglass, undertook a radical and revolutionary analysis and redefinition of sculpture as it exists in space. Somewhat less familiar are Judd's numerous architectural and furniture designs, works which are closely related in formal terms to his ubiquitous art objects but which much more successfully reflect his concerns with utility. In 1971, Judd bought an old fort near Marfa, Texas; by systematically acquiring and transforming more and more local property, he amassed the largest ensemble of contemporary art in the world, with permanent installations of his own work and that of Carl André, John Chamberlan, Dan Flavin, and others. "Donald Judd : Architecture" presents drawings, design sketches, ground plans, and photographs of the grounds and architecture of this Minimalist desert oasis, and bears witness to Judd's role as the visionary architect and stage director of his own oeuvre. This book first appeared in 1991, in German. It has been thoroughly revised and expanded for this, its first English edition

Summary:
The New York based architect Lebbeus Woods – founder of the Research Institute for Experimental Architecture (RIEA) – concerns himself intensively with architectural theory and experimental architecture. His approach is free from the pressures of specific purpose built projects and rather tends to develop visionary projects which integrate research, philosophy, and art. The subject of his exhibition entitled “System Wien” which he developed in collaboration with Christoph a. Kumpusch is the urban structure of the city of Vienna which he plans to interfere in with specific architectural interventions. This publication - published for the exhibition of the same name in the MAK Vienna - documents the various works comprising the "System Wien" project. It develops an idea that the making of architectuere can be understood as the organization of energy. The project explores how energy relations in public and private city spaces might be represented tectonically in the form of drawings and installations; how existing energy elations in the city can be changed by the input tectonically in the form of drawings and installations; and hoe the future of the city need not depend for creative energy input on the development of building projects requiring large capital investments and institutional approval, but rather on the redistribution of energy at the human scale of the street and the room.
