Summary:
The Seagram building rises over New York’s Park Avenue, seeming to float above the street with perfect lines of bronze and glass. Considered one of the greatest icons of twentieth-century architecture, the building was commissioned by Samuel Bronfman, founder of the Canadian distillery dynasty Seagram. Bronfman’s daughter Phyllis Lambert was twenty-seven years old when she took over the search for an architect and chose Mies van der Rohe, a pioneering modern master of what he termed “skin and bones” architecture. Mies, who designed the elegant, deceptively simple thirty-eight-story tower along with Philip Johnson, emphasized the beauty of structure and fine materials, and set the building back from the avenue, creating an urban oasis with the building’s plaza. Through her choice, Lambert established her role as a leading architectural patron and singlehandedly changed the face of American urban architecture.

Summary:
The Lost Vanguard documents the work of modernist architects in the Soviet Union during the years following the 1917 revolution and civil war. In little more than a decade, some of the most radical buildings of the twentieth century were completed by a small group of architects who developed a new architectural language in support of new social goals of communal life. Rarely published and virtually inaccessible until the collapse of the Soviet regime, these important buildings have remained unknown and unappreciated. Richard Pare's photographs reveal the powerful forms of these structures, some still in use but many now abandoned and decayed. Massive industrial complexes like the Dnieper River Dam and MoGES, which supplies electricity to the city of Moscow; vast communal houses for workers, including Ginzburg's Narkomfin; commercial buildings and government offices; and smaller clubs and theaters were all built in this brief period. In an incisive essay, architectural historian Jean-Louis Cohen surveys the history of the period, providing a context for the emergence of this startling new architecture in parallel to contemporary experiments in Europe.

Summary:
The Ben Ezra Synagogue in Cairo is best known as the synogogue in which the "Cairo Geniza" was found--an astonishingly rich store of ancient books, manuscripts, correspondences, and records dating back to the tenth century. Copiously illustrated with plans, engravings, and photographs, "Fortifications and the Synagogue" describes the recent restoration of this ancient synagogue, as well as the historical and archaeological research essential to its preservation and to an understanding of the religious communities that founded modern Cairo. The work is unprecedented in its comprehensive examination of the subject, presenting the first measured survey and photographic study of the fortress and synagogue, the first thorough study of the Geniza manuscripts, and a complete history of the synagogue from the Geniza period to the present.

Mies van der Rohe’s 1941–45 Farnsworth House and Philip Johnson’s 1947 Glass House in New Caanan, Connecticut: two haikus of glass and concrete that rewrote the history of modern residential architecture. Much ink has already been spilled on the subject by critics and historians intent on deconstructing our notions of domesticity; however these two masterpieces have also taken on lives of their own in the minds of countless artists, architects, and designers. They have inspired nearly ninety creations for an exclusive project with the National Historic Preservation Trust, collected here in Modern Views . With an introduction by critic Paul Goldberger and essays by Phyllis Lambert and Sylvia Lavin; contributors include David Adjaye, Tadao Ando, Peter Eisenman, Zaha Hadid, Maira Kalman, Annie Leibowitz, Daniel Libeskind, Thom Mayne, and Rafael Viñoly, among others.
