Summary:
A detailed history of the international modern house, illustrated with 400 photographs and architectural drawings. As the basic building block of the human environment, the house has served as an inexhaustible playground where architects experiment with theories, styles, forms, and materials. Arguably, the best and most innovative residential architecture has been conceived and realized over the past 100 yearsÑfrom the cantileveral serenity of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater to the spectacular Chemosphere, which resembles a UFO that has planted its landing gear in the Hollywood Hills. This book examines major shifts in international domestic design over the past century as it highlights a superb selection of extraordinary homes. Author Richard Weston engagingly tells the story of the twentieth-century house through eight semi-chronological design themes. From the Arts and Crafts period to the present, he covers a wide range of homes exemplifying each period and presents more than 100 benchmark dwellings with detailed architectural drawings. Weston also addresses the fascinating ways in which domestic design has both reflected and influenced the changing social climates and lifestyles of the past century, making this a book that will appeal to anthropologists, as well as architects, designers, and homeowners.

Summary:
In this comprehensive survey, Richard Weston traces the course of Modernism from its beginnings to its contemporary manifestations. He explores the Modernist movements of the early twentieth century – Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Purism – and concludes with the ‘post-modernist’ experiments of the 1980s and 1990s. He shows how the ‘tradition of the new’ became the creative credo of a small group of progressive artists and how, with the emigration of leading German modernists to Britain and the USA in the 1930s, the theory and practice of Modernism became widespread. What had begun as a cluster of loosely related artistic movements scattered across Europe emerged as the dominant style of the twentieth century.

Summary:

Summary:
After a century largely dominated by discussions of space and form, there is now renewed interest in the material and tectonic aspects of architecture. This illustrated book takes a detailed and timely look at the importance of materials in architecture, focusing particularly on modern and contemporary buildings. Richard Weston begins with a brief cultural history of major building materials--such as timber, earth, stone, steel, and glass--exploring how they have been produced, considered, worked, and used in a variety of buildings and cultures. He then explores the ways that architects, theorists, and critics have articulated the relationship between materials and architectural forms and spaces throughout modern history. Other featured topics include the importance of place, time, junctions, finish, and meaning; the proposition that in an increasingly global and virtual world, many architects emphasize the material qualities of buildings to ensure a heightened sense of reality; and a comprehensive survey of current and prospective developments in materials, from refinements of such familiar materials as fiber-reinforced concrete and “intelligent” glass to new synthetic compounds and working methods. Together, these varied perspectives on the material art of building offer insights into the impact that the type and treatment of materials has on how buildings can be constructed and designed, how they function, and how they fare over time.
