Micro : Very small buildings
$32.95
(available to order)
Summary:
Very small buildings have a special appeal. The constraints of space and cost can actually liberate the imagination. Most of the projects in this book consist of no more than a few key spaces, in many cases just a single space. They are united only by their compact nature, the pleasure that they can provide, and the intelligence that they embody. A brief introduction(...)

They are united only by their compact nature, the pleasure that they can provide, and the intelligence that they embody. A brief introduction is followed by five thematic chapters: Public Realm, Community Spaces, On the Move, Compact Living, and Extra Space. The 53 case studies include a park bench that transforms into a shelter for the homeless in Australia, an inflatable treetop structure for rainforest observation, a portable house for victims of hurricane Katrina, a transportable church in Finland, and a suspended office in France.

New work, new workspace

Summary:
If you can set up your laptop anywhere, what is the meaning of the dedicated workspace? 'New work, new workspace' argues that designated space is still needed, but that it is changing fast. As collaborative interaction is favoured over individual toil, with millenials and Gen X taking a very different attitude to work, and as social upheaval and technological innovation(...)

If you can set up your laptop anywhere, what is the meaning of the dedicated workspace? 'New work, new workspace' argues that designated space is still needed, but that it is changing fast. As collaborative interaction is favoured over individual toil, with millenials and Gen X taking a very different attitude to work, and as social upheaval and technological innovation influence the form nthat the places take in which we are employed forever. Metrics for measuring the effectiveness of workspace show that good design, which is focused on the environment and wellbeing that a workforce needs, is still valued. At the same time, more generic spaces, such as co-working spaces, have to fit everyone – or at least all of the target community. Detailed case studies showcase all the places where people work – in large and small offices, in home spaces, in ateliers and workshops and architects’ studios.

Summary:
For more than fifty years, Halley Research Station—located on the Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica’s Weddell Sea—has collected a continuous stream of meteorological and atmospheric data critical to our understanding of polar atmospheric chemistry, rising sea levels, and the depletion of the ozone layer. Since the station’s establishment in 1956, there have been six Halley stations, each designed to withstand the difficult climatic conditions. The first four stations were crushed by snow. The fifth featured a steel platform, allowing it to rise above snow cover, but it, too, had to be abandoned when it moved too far from the mainland, making its habitation precarious. Completed in 2012, Halley VI is the winning design from a competition in collaboration with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Like its predecessor, Halley VI can rise to avoid snow accumulation, but it is also the first research station able to be fully relocatable, its eight modules situated atop ski-fitted hydraulic legs. This book tells the story of this iconic piece of architecture’s design and creation, supplemented with many illustrations, including plans and previously unpublished photographs.
