The NAi Prize is to be awarded every two years to the best building by a young Dutch architectural practice. This book documents the five short-listed buildings by VMX Architecten, NL Architects, Korteknie Stuhlmacher Architecten, MVRDV and René van Zuuk Architekten and analyses the current position held by young Dutch architects. Are they following in the footsteps of their forebears or blazing a trail of their own? Is there greater leeway in the Netherlands for experiment or can comparable architecture be found elsewhere? And can these five practices be regarded as a barometer for the latest generation of designers? The short-listed projects were presented during the Venice Biennale 2002. Photography: Ralph Kämena, design: Coppens en Alberts.

Summary:
OASE 90 investigates the expectation behind existing value models in architecture. Many problems in today’s architecture world would vanish if every once in a while it was clearer what is meant by good architecture. The ‘crisis of criticism’, for instance, is a symptom of the impossibility of knowing (or daring to know) what good architecture is. Over the past century, models for architecture evaluation such as modernism and postmodernism have been modified by supermodernism and retromodernism, and more recently by sustainability. Nevertheless, it is impossible to work with architecture – in design, theory or history – without making assumptions about criteria for quality. This issue uncovers and makes explicit the assumptions underlying these models, by posing the simple question ‘What is good architecture?’ in different ways and have it answered by people whose ‘main occupation’ is architecture. This issue of OASE can be like a banquet at which each guest selects something entirely different from the menu in a well-reasoned and forthright way – and so keeps the architecture party going.

Summary:
Mediated Messages presents a collection of original writing exploring the role played by the media in the development of postmodern architecture in the 1970s and 80s. The book's twelve chapters and case-studies examine a range of contemporary periodicals and exhibitions to explore their role in the postmodern. This focus on mediation as a key feature of architectural post-modernism, and the recognition that post-modernism grew out of developments in the media, opens up the possibility of an important new account of post-modernism distinct from existing narratives.

Summary:

The history of architecture is often read in terms of periods that each have their own zeitgeist and movements that each have their own architectural language. What happens if we depart from this zeitgeist concept and use a cyclical history model instead? Summary:
The history of architecture is often read in terms of periods that each have their own zeitgeist and movements that each have their own architectural language. What happens if we depart from this zeitgeist concept and use a cyclical history model instead? In the 1970s and 1980s, this question was usually considered from the seemingly mutually exclusive points of view of the modern, the anti-modern and the postmodern positions. Over the past two decades, contemporary European architecture developed a different frame of reference, one in which the horizon is no longer provided by the architecture of the modern movement. This issue traces how, against the background of this broadening frame of reference, a different understanding of modernity emerged.

Summary:
The up-and-coming Dutch firm ZUS (Zones Urbaines Sensibles), founded in 2001 by Elma van Boxel and Kristian Koreman, is a think tank of two--tackling the landscape architect’s role in the contemporary city. Based in Rotterdam, an ideal vantage for both research and innovative project-building, ZUS participates in projects micro and macro, ranging from clothing design to large-scale interventions in the landscape. And the team aims high: “Our spatial interventions contribute to a higher state of consciousness of the naked reality of our modern, urban culture and environment, although not always by accepting it as the only reality.” Their 2006 proposal, “Discoforum” is characteristic. Noticing that Rotterdam clubs are divided by race, ZUS created a design that would place one transparent wall in each club facing out onto a shared outdoor space. Such proposals and research are combined with the duo’s own commentary in this volume, making it invaluable for anyone curious about the next wave of architecture and urban planning.
