Summary:
In the guise of diva Miss Chief Eagle Testikle, Kenneth Monkman takes camp aesthetics to new extremes of political disturbance. Setting queer against straight, and both these against his dual identity as a Canadian of Cree descent, Monkman aka Miss Chief revisits the way key events in North American history have been represented. Recent performances and installations featured outlandish versions of objects like Indian moccasins in museum displays, videos with tragicomic takes on Indians' as the other to colonists, and Monkman's own extraordinary paintings. Based on masterpieces of landscape and history art, these expose the repressions and fantasies grounding narratives of the winning of the West. Interpellations will be of exceptional interest to art historians and all those concerned with North American aboriginal civilization. Essays from acclaimed art historians Richard Hill, Jonathan Katz, and Todd Porterfield address issues central to Monkman's activity: among others, absurdist tactics, alternative models of time and history, the interplay of identity, sexuality, and sovereignty. A camp design with gilt-edge pages and ultra-rich color illustrations makes this book an ideal vehicle for presenting Miss Chief's rampages through art history.

Summary:
A survey of the work of thirteen emerging contemporary artists living in the Maritimes and their engagement with the question of region. The publication’s title reflects the multiplicity and uncertain origin of the region's identity, defined as much by dreams and myths of escape as by any inherent qualities. One of the most enduring tropes about the creative process is the notion that the largest gathering of people generates the most interaction, and thus the greatest production of new ideas. Countering this myth is the proposition that large centres often produce homogeneity, and that incessant communication can even lead to a kind of cultural sameness. It may be precisely the very hindrance to communication - geography, distance, isolation - that produce the new approaches that loom large in the work featured here.

Summary:
Through a series of comprehensive contextual essays The Beaver Hall Group: 1920s Modernism in Montreal interweaves the work of this pioneering artistic collective within a broader narrative of the arts in the first half of the twentieth century. Exploring the groups’ greater role in the modernity of Canada—and more specifically the cultural context of Montreal—the book takes on core themes such as the rise of the metropolis, juxtapositions between economic progress and cultural development, and the impact of gender on critical approaches to both artists and their work. The Beaver Hall Group: 1920s Modernism in Montreal sits alongside a major exhibition and is published in partnership with the Montreal Museum of Fine Art.

Des photographies réalisées en collaboration avec des participant·e·s japonais·e·s relatent les diverses activations en contexte spécifique.

In this second edition the objective was to select an area of the city of Montreal and invite artists to use it as a space for research and creation for the entire summer of 2004. Thus Montreal's Mont Royal park, and specifically the Olmsted Path which crosses it, were chosen for their significant features, rich histories and public affection. Participating artists include Raymond Gervais, Michel Goulet, Daniel Olson and Alan Storey. An essay is accompanied by texts on each individual work as well as an introduction to the event.
