Summary:
This volume gathers an exceptional selection of decorative folding screens, exploring the history and semantics of the form by tracing trajectories of cross-pollination between East and West. At their core, folding screens embody liminality and the idea of sitting at the threshold of two conditions, both literally and metaphorically. They cross barriers between different spaces, disciplines, cultures and worlds. Taking that notion as a starting place, this volume follows processes of hybridization between different art forms and functions, collaborative relationships between designers and artists, and the emergence of newly created works. This gorgeous catalog features more than 70 examples of folding screens, including valuable historical objects and more recent works from international museums and private collections, plus a selection of new creations commissioned from more than 15 international artists specifically for this project.

Summary:
The interiors of the great country and town houses built in Britain in the eighteenth century were splendid creations, increasingly extravagant as fashions changed and aristocratic home owners attempted to outdo one another. This gorgeous book surveys the decorative schemes of these fabulous homes, considering the combined effects created by design, furniture, textiles, silver, and artworks. John Cornforth, the foremost authority on British interiors of this era, covers a wide range of subjects. He discusses changing social practice and the uses to which rooms were put; the way that fashions in dress mirrored fashions in interiors; the impact of chinoiserie and Eastern styles that became prevalent due to burgeoning trade; the primacy of upholstery in beds, curtains, wall hangings, seat furniture, and case covers; the influence of decorator William Kent; and the ways that collections of art were integrated into designs. And he concludes with detailed case studies of eight pre-eminent country houses.

Summary:
Minimalist is a term used by the media frequently, and often incorrectly, in a wide variety of contexts these days. In the opening chapters Franco Bertoni traces the origins and development of minimalism: from religious asceticism, through 18th century rationalism to the various current schools and modes. This introduction provides a necessary and well-founded guide to the concept of simplicity, of minimalism in design, photography, theatre, music and literature. 22 renowned designers such as Tadao Ando, Giorgio Armani, Michael Gabellini, Konstantin Grcic, Donald Judd, Calvin Klein, Issey Miyake, Jean Nouvel, Claudio Silvestrin, Eduardo Souto de Moura and Hannes Wettstein are portrayed in the main section, each with a concise biography, bibliography and particulars of their work.

Summary:
