Summary:
The early twentieth century was a time of extraordinary change in Europe. War and revolution shattered the traditional cohesion of European civilisation, while the machine age brought mass production and distribution and a new sense of internationalism. This ‘heroic’ period of modernity found particularly forceful expression in graphic design and photomontage throughout Europe, where new techniques allowed a fusion of typography, painting and photography, evoking the dynamism and fragmentation of cinema. "Avant-garde Graphics: 1918 – 34" showcases the work of many of the leading practitioners of the Modern movement, from Italian Futurists, the Dutch members of De Stijl and the German Bauhaus, to the Constructivists of Russia and central Europe. Drawn from the collection of Merrill C. Berman, one of the greatest collections of twentieth-century graphic art in the world, this book features colour reproductions of original posters, prints, book designs and political and commercial ephemera, together with original designers’ layouts and photomontages.

Summary:
Despite the growing importance of environmental issues, many graphic designers and printers remain unaware of the huge potential of paper. This is a book about paper that addresses the specific needs of the design and print industries, including advice on die-cutting, embossing, pop-up and sculptural effects, and a wealth of special printing techniques. Designed by the author’s own company, Williams & Phoa, the book itself demonstrates a variety of these effects, with spot-varnished and die-cut pages and a unique paper cover. Outstanding examples of international design illustrate the traditional craft skills of the graphic designer alongside the latest products of new technology. "Paperwork" received the prestigious Design and Art Directors’ Association (D) silver award in 1994 for the most outstanding complete book.

Summary:
This book aims to better understand the working process of the most interesting and challenging contemporary typographic designers, and to show a great variety of different examples of typography in the publishing world. It is a detailed look into editorial design, in books, magazines, newspapers, catalogues, annual reports and brochures. Type at Work presents: ‘Conceptual and Visible Thinking’, in which typography is deliberately used to support the expression of a certain concept or idea; ‘Xplicit Typography’, in which the selected projects use type as image; and "unctional Knowledge" gathering projects whose main criteria are clarity and legibility. "Type at Work" is packed with visual inspiration and provides profound insight into the use of type. The book includes work by today’s best typographic designers around the world, including Cahan & Associates, Peter Bil'ak, Martin Venezky, EumoGràphic, Frost Design, Plazm, Tau Diseño, Max Kisman, Moniteurs, Typerware, Jon Barnbrook, Orange Juice and Mieke Gerritzen. Author Andreu Balius is co-founder of the Typerware studio in Barcelona and has received numerous international design awards.

Summary:
In Illusive we identified the main trends in contemporary illustration and introduced many young illustrators. Since then, the demand for illustration has continued to grow - and with it the range of application and the forms of expression in this medium. This positive development is confirmed by the exciting work of international illustrators that we have seen since publishing Illusive; it was thus a logical step to present the best of these new works in Illusive 2. Illusive 2 is a survey of current illustration from around the world; unlike other titles on this subject, all of the work was selected for inclusion based solely on its artistic merit. The book reveals a trend toward Neo-Realism that is demonstrated by the willingness of today's magazines to use illustration in almost the same way as photography. In general, the illustrations featured in Illusive 2 have become more differentiated and complex - the spontaneous-looking scribbles of years past have given way to elaborate, multi-layered collages. The variety of styles and new design approaches is impressive. Illusive 2 includes a broad range of illustrations including personal artistic work, fashion illustration and commercial projects, revealing a diversity that shows how this design discipline functions independently of fickle fashion trends. At the same time, the book outlines current developments and the many design approaches that coexist today. Because it is hard to keep an overview amid such a wealth of material, texts and interviews with leading design agencies provide context and give surprising insights into techniques, methods and motivations.
