Summary:
Today’s designers are creating compelling atmospheres and interactive experiences by merging hardware and software with architecture and design. This book is a collection of this innovative work produced where virtual realms meet the real world and where dataflow confronts the human senses. It presents an international spectrum of interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of laboratory, trade show, and urban space that play with the new frontiers of perception, interaction, and staging created by current technology. The work reveals how technology is fundamentally changing and expanding strategies for the targeted use of architecture, art, communication, and design for the future.

Summary:
These days, a computer is as much a part of every household's standard equipment as a refrigerator, and yet the explosion of computer technology in the last several decades has transformed the daily life of every member of society far more than even utopians would ever have allowed themselves to dream. No wonder, then, that from design to production, architecture too is becoming more and more subject to digital influences. The range of those influences stretches from the classical computer programs used in design and presentation to media-supported design processes all the way to computerized production techniques, to say nothing of industrialized bricklayer "robots." From measurement to planning and production, archi-tecture is the product of a closely coordinated digital pro-cess chain. What influence do digital design and production methods have on contemporary architecture? How are these new methods changing architecture and the way it is created? Where does the potential of digital media for architecture lie? What are the areas in which every individual firm can begin to use them? What are the advantages of working electronically? How and at what cost can these methods be integrated into the day-to-day work of the professional architect? This publication offers answers to these and many other questions on all aspects of the digital design and construction process.

Summary:
Architectural facades now have the potential to be literally kinetic, through automated sunscreens and a range of animated surfaces. This book explores the aesthetic potential of these new types of moving facades. Critique of theory and practice in architecture is combined here with ideas from kinetic art of the 1960's. From this background the basic principles of kinetics are defined and are used to generate experimental computer animations. By classifying the animations, a theory of kinetic form called 'state change' is developed. This design research provides a resource for those interested in the capacity of kinetics to enliven the public face of architecture.

Summary:
The collection of architectural design projects included provides an overview of philosophical theories that focus on what appears to be real, presenting a range of methodologies and a set of tools for addressing this discourse. The contents have been divided into 5 sections, each chapter developing a design criteria process involving one of the following areas in philosophy: hyperreality and simulacra within postmodern philosophy, drawing on Jean Baudrillard; semiology and the authority of form; complexity and noumenon/non-Euclidean geometry; the exhausted confines of structuralist theory according to Roland Barthes; and lastly authenticity, with the aim to describe how we perceive reality and the urban fabric. Incorporating the ontological potential of space into a design process and part of a set of design criteria will help develop an understanding of the conditions under which forms and design criteria are generated.

With today’s digital technology, the image is no longer a stable representation of the world, but a programmable view of a database that is updated in real time. It no longer functions as a political and iconic representation, but plays a vital role in synchronic data-to-data relationships. Summary:
With today’s digital technology, the image is no longer a stable representation of the world, but a programmable view of a database that is updated in real time. It no longer functions as a political and iconic representation, but plays a vital role in synchronic data-to-data relationships. It is not only part of a program, but it contains its own operating code: the image is a program in itself. Softimage aims to account for that new reality, taking readers on a journey that gradually undoes our unthinking reliance on the apparent solidity of the photographic image and building in its place an original and timely theorization of the digital image in all its complexity.

Summary:
Interspace investigates the spatial and social consequences of a data-driven society where personalised information flows produce a multitude of personalised readings of the collective sphere and thus, the role of public space is to be questioned. Accompanied by a new understanding about authorship and new techniques of design, this participatory model calls out for new ways of organising spaces. With regard to the changes that the last substantial structural transformation of the public – web 2.0 – has brought along in architecture, Interspace analyses what has architecture got to do with big data and what is the architects’ role at the time when their expertise is being challenged by digital technologies.

Summary:
Presentation of a series of ground-breaking experiments with topological optimization of architectural structures. Topology optimization – a method widely applied in the aeronautical and automotive industries - may enable material reductions of up to 70 pct. in concrete structures, while generating novel, architectural forms. The realization of such complex structural morphologies however, calls for the development of new digital means of construction. The publication illustrates the development of new experimental, robotic production methods for the fabrication of novel architectural structures, and contextualizes the application of structural optimization as an architectural design strategy through historical examples, spanning from 18th century physics-based methods to contemporary building practices.
