Summary:
Analyzing the evolution of the Roman amphitheatre as an architectural form, Katherine Welch addresses the critical period in the history of this building type. She covers the origins and dissemination under the Republic (from the third to first centuries BC); monumentalization as an architectural form under Augustus; and canonization as a building type with the Colosseum (AD 80). The study then focuses on the reception of the amphitheatre in the Greek East, a part of the Empire strongly divided about the new realities of Roman rule.

Summary:
For members of the social elite in eighteenth-century England, extended travel for pleasure came to be considered part of an ideal education as well as an important symbol of social status. Italy, and especially Rome—a fashionable, exciting, and comfortable city—became the focus of such early tourists’ interest. In this distinctive book, historian Jeremy Black recreates the actual tourist experiences of those who traveled to Italy on a Grand Tour. Relying on the private diaries and personal letters of travelers, rather than on the self-conscious accounts of literary travelers who wrote for wider audiences, the book presents a fresh and authentic picture of how British tourists experienced Italy, its landscapes, women, food, music, Catholicism, and more. Using material from archives across Britain and a generous selection of illustrations, the book highlights the discrepancy between the idealized view of the Grand Tour and its reality: what people were meant to do was not necessarily what they did, what the guide books described as splendid was not always so perceived. Black discusses what Italian experiences meant to British visitors, and he considers the effects of tourism on British culture during this most exciting of centuries.

Summary:
For Italian city builders more than a thousand years ago, the urban realm was the great theatre where their best aspirations were played out, the place where society said the most substantial things about who they were and what they longed for. In "Timeless cities", architect David Mayernik reveals how Venice, Rome, Florence, Siena, and Pienza emerged from the cultural ideas of humanism that characterized Italian society from late antiquity to the eighteenth century. Cities were literally designed to be models of the mind and images of heaven. Mayernik takes the reader on an architect's tour of these five cities and describes the cultural beliefs and ideas behind the buildings. Not only a journey into the past, "Timeless cities" also explains why these city-building ideas are relevant today.

Summary:
Anyone who has traveled in Romania or has an interest in the country has admired the striking tradition of exterior house decoration. This book surveys and illustrates the historical forms of Romanian house decoration, elements of innovation in the tradition (in design, materials, methods, etc.) and examines the aesthetics of the designs as well as their metaphorical and symbolic functions. The fieldwork from which the bulk of this book derives was done in a period that represents a watershed point between ancient styles of house decoration and the changing tastes and materials of the modern world. It was during this time that the Communist regime was breaking down and a new order was about to arise. House decoration at that time was a vivid vernacular expression both of the peoples' frustrations and of their unflagging optimism and creativity. The illustrations are beautiful, comprehensive and unique; the bibliography is extensive, with English explanations of all foreign titles.

Summary:
This is the first in a new series of five books describing and illustrating the seminal architectural traditions of the world. "Antiquity" traces architectural history from its very beginnings until the time when the traditions that shape today's environments began to flourish. Highly illustrated, with 1,200 colour photographs and 400 drawings, the book is divided into ten sections progressing through time: West Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean, Pre-Columbian America, Hellenic Hellenes Divided; Macedonians Ascendant Etruscans and Hellenistic Romans, Imperial Rome Christianity, and Empire Rome, and New Rome; The West: Imperial Revival and the Latin Cross; and The East: Imperial Survival and the Greek Cross. More than a catalogue of buildings, in this work Tadgell provides their political, technological, social and cultural contexts and explores architecture, not only as the development of form and space but as an expression of the civilization within which it evolves. The buildings are analyzed and illustrated with photographs and drawings while the societies that produced them are brought to life through a broad selection of their artefacts
