Summary:
French cultural historian DeJean presents an entertaining account of how home life was virtually reinvented in Paris from 1670 to 1765 as sofas, running water and flush toilets appeared in modern residences: the city became a giant workshop in which inventions in the arts and crafts and innovative technologies were tried out. Louis XIV's and Louis XV's royal mistresses displayed a bold vision for integrating architecture, interior decor and fashion, thus influencing modern comfort. In private mansions, French architects subdivided interior space to allow for varying degrees of privacy. As bathing became a pleasurable, commonplace activity, tubs became more comfortable and were redesigned as decorative objects in their own right. Men fell in love with the superexpensive flush toilet; the sofa—created by the architect Meissonnier—attained instant celebrity status; and interior decoration became a subset of the new architecture of private life as Parisians discovered that domestic interiors should be the expression of their personal taste.

Summary:
Boston's Big Dig was the most expensive urban public work in U.S. history. The city's elevated six-lane highway, called the Central Artery, and the two tunnels under Boston Harbor, were some of the most congested, accident-prone motorways in the United States. The city's solution, nicknamed The Big Dig, was to replace the elevated highway with a series of eight-to-ten-lane underground expressways. Public Works presents a series of 14 disarmingly modest, speculative interventions by the Boston-based MY Studio, a multidisciplinary design firm operating in the space between architecture, art and landscape.

Summary:
An unusual journey between Breslau and Dessau, from the World Cultural Heritage of the Centennial Hall (1913) to the World Cultural Heritage of Bauhaus dating from the twenties : and there are many highpoints of modern architecture in-between—in Görlitz, Dresden-Hellerau, Leipzig or Chemnitz, for example. Almost all the great modernist architects are gathered together here, from Hans Poelzig and Henry van de Velde to Heinrich Tessenow, Richard Riemerschmid, Hans Scharoun, Erich Mendelsohn and even Walter Gropius. But the focus is also on the cities themselves; at a very early date, their progressive building councillors thought hard about European urban development — about buildings ranging from striking tower blocks to top-quality mass housing. This publication illustrates an important chapter of architectural history in an original, condensed-format travel guide.

Summary:
In Modern North, author Julie Decker presents thirty-four of the most compelling and far-ranging possibilities of contemporary architecture in the North. These buildings—located in northern Canada, Scandinavia, and Alaska—are united in the way they embrace extreme conditions. Rather than shut them out, these conditions are welcomed and often formed into the buildings' structures and materials, as in the way architecture is employed to mediate the harshness of the low-lying sun without replacing it with the harshness of artificial lights.
