Summary:

This book profiles the emergence of colour in architecture, both internal and external, selecting colourful buildings from around the world, built and unbuilt. The book is divided into two main sections, architecture and art, within which various key design philosophies and techniques are explored, such as screen printed enamels, film, lamination, and sandblasting. Exponents of these trends from all over the world are represented, including architects Will Alsop (UK), Sauerbruch and Hutton (Germany), and Jamie Carpenter (USA) and artists Brian Clarke (UK), Warren Carther (Canada), and Jose Castrillo (Spain), with illustrations of their individual projects.

Summary:
Nanotechnology is widely regarded as one of the twenty-first century's key technologies, and its economic importance is sharply on the rise. In architecture and the construction industry it has potentials that are already usable today, especially the coating of surfaces to lend them functional characteristics such as increased tensile strength, self-cleaning capacity, fire resistance, and others. Additives based on nanomaterials make common materials lighter, more permeable, and more resistant to wear. Nanomaterials are not only extremely useful for roofs and facades; they also expand design possibilities for interior and exterior rooms and spaces. Nano insulating materials open up new possibilities for ecologically oriented architects. In this book, with a foreword by nobel prize winner Harold Kroto, architects, interior designers and designers will find an introduction to the scientific background specifically tailored to their needs, a critical discussion of the advantages and limits of the technology, and above all a comprehensive presentation of sixteen characteristics and functions of nanomaterials that are specially relevant for building and design, illustrated by numerous international project examples.

Summary:
Material Matters brings together texts and work by theorists and practitioners who are making material central to their work and reflects the diverse areas of inquiry which are expanding current material discourse. Focusing on the cultural, political, economic, technological and intellectual forces which shape material practices in architecture, the contributors draw on disciplines ranging from philosophy, history and pedagogy to art practice and digital and low-tech fabrication. By paying critical attention to material, a wide range of issues emerge in Material Matters which are otherwise excluded from architectural discourse, issues that shape and determine the buildings we make, the processes we use and the ways we understand them. Beautifully illustrated and designed, this book is a unique collection which will be of great interest to architectural practitioners and theorists who want to consider the wider implications of material practice, and to students who are developing their own approach to making buildings.
