Summary:
Are small homes going to be the new norm? By mid-century, a large number of people will be living by themselves, meaning it is time the building industry gave small homes more attention. In the Dutch city of Almere, BouwEXPO Tiny Housing launched an open ideas competition in 2016. The winners built sixteen permanent and greatly varied houses at one location in the city, all of which are actually lived in today. The houses naturally serve as inspiration for small dwellings elsewhere, whether on vacant lots, as infill, on a roof, or in completely new neighbourhoods. This book offers an in-depth reportage on the entire design, funding, and building process of the awarded small homes.

Summary:
This exploration of built and yet-to-be-realized aquatic habitats shows how water has become architecture's next frontier. Whether they're floating on top, hovering over, or submerged beneath the water, each of the more than fifty structures examined here demonstrates an innovative use of water resources. Colourfully illustrated with photographs, drawings, and plans, this global and historic sampling includes Shanghai's Bionic Tower, complete with its own lake; Biorock, an artificial reef in the Indian Ocean; an undersea hotel where scuba divers can spend a comfortable night; and Sweden's Ice Hotel, where translucent frozen walls reveal the beauty of the Northern Lights. Each of these projects demonstrates man's ability to live in the water without interfering with nature's rhythms. Together they offer reassuring proof that today's architects are finding workable and appealing solutions to the problems of shrinking resources and growing populations. Summary:
Conceived in the 1960s, Walt Disney's original plans for his Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT) outlined a utopian laboratory for domestic technology, where families would live, work, and play in an integrated environment. Like many of his contemporaries, Disney imagined homes that would attend to their inhabitants' every need, and he regarded the home as a site of unending technological progress. This fixation on "space-age" technology, with its promise of domestic bliss, marked an important mid-twentieth-century shift in understandings of the American home. In A Small World, Davin Heckman considers how domestic technologies that free people to enjoy leisure time in the home have come to be understood as necessary parts of everyday life.
