Summary:
Architect and propagandist of the modern movement, Alberto Sartoris (1901-1998) assembled a remarkable photography collection of modern architecture, published in part in two anthologies that have since achieved mythical stature: «Gli elementi dell'architettura funzionale» and «l'Encyclopédie de l'architecture nouvelle». These photographs document the architectural works around the world, from Le Corbusier to Luis Barragàn, photographed by the best specialists of their period. This work presents the collection that Alberto Sartoris donated to the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne. It also throws light on a poorly understood aspect of twentieth century architecture, namely, the mechanisms behind the creation and diffusion of the «image of modern architecture», as well as the determining role played by photography in this process.

Summary:
It fired the imagination of hundreds of progressive artists across Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Hungary and Poland. It became a symbol of modernity for millions through its use in magazines, newspapers, advertising and books. Published to accompany an exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, this book presents the work that redefined the very notion of art and embodied at times a dizzying freedom from traditional social roles. Familiar names such as László Moholy-Nagy, Josef Sudek and the Bauhaus are connected to a wealth of individuals and organizations whose influence is being recovered for the first time. The perceptive text explores topics ranging from the avant-garde (surrealism, experimental photography) to popular culture (tabloids, sports, the ‘new woman’) to extremist politics and war. Particular attention is given to photomontage, a technique that epitomized the era and found broad acceptance among artists and mass media outlets.

American Modern explores the reinvention of documentary photography in the 1930s, focusing on the work of three iconic figures. It identifies the points where Abbott, Evans, and Bourke-White connected, diverged, and competed, and demonstrates how commercial and governmental commissions, the influence of mass media, the establishment of public institutions of modern art, and international theories of photography all intersected to establish the now-dominant documentary style.

Summary:
«Modernist photography» re-examines the classic period of 20th-century photography using new critical approaches to consider five recurrent visual themes during the years 1915 to 1945. These themes cut across such stylistic movements as Pictorialism, Surrealism, and the New Vision, and include the transformation of objects, experimental images of the body, visions of the city, the industrialization of the countryside, and experimental directions in poster design and typography. This thematic approach fosters new perspectives on such key photographers as Bernice Abbott, Brassaï, Walker Evans, Raoul Hausmann, Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks and Man Ray and emphasizes the interactions between European and American practitioners. The catalogue includes chapters on each of the five themes by ICP Curators Christopher Phillips and Vanessa Rocco. It is based on a selection of 70 works from the Daniel Cowin Collection. The collection of about 1,600 images dates from 1860 to 1960 and includes a range of processes and formats--postcards, stereographs, carte-de-vistes, tintypes, albumen prints, and gelatin silver prints.

He also developed close relationships with artists Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, and Man Ray, among others, and is credited with discovering Joseph Cornell. This book is published to commemorate the centenary of Levy’s birth and to celebrate the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s major acquisition of more than 2,500 photographs from his collection.
