Project
AP207.S1.1970.PR01
Description:
This project series documents Pettena's performance "Cancellazione di uno stato". This performance, understood as a visual poem, is described in written instructions. The performance begins with two jets flying over an American state, each one takes off from opposite corners of a state and meet in the center, forming an 'X' over the state. The flights are meant to occur at the specific moment when the performance can be captured by a weather satellite. The images captured by the satellite would then be broadcasted on the weather forecast on national stations. Pettena used a similar idea for a proposal entitled "Imprisonment" for the Graz "Trigon '71" competition. The project series contains the typescript instructions for the performance and a project description in English and in Italian.

Description:
The subseries documents the show-event base “Fabricaciones / Fabrications,” held at the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) (February 10th to April 20th, 1998). The firm identified this project as number 110. “Fabrications was an innovative exhibition on architecture conceived and produced jointly by MACBA, MoMA, the Wexner Center for the Arts and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition presented sixteen life-size architectural interventions, four at each participating center, each produced by a team of architects who explored tectonic issues in a broad sense. The four installations presented at Plaça dels Àngels – the square in front of the MACBA building – explored and modified the surfaces that defined this public space. Vicente Gualla (Barcelona) created an intervention on the façade opposite the Museum, which drew attention to the occupation and the population density that was absent from the buildings in the square. Abalos & Herreros (Madrid) acted upon the façade of the MACBA building itself, cladding and decorating its most monumental elements: the tower and the balcony. Riegler Riewe (Graz) worked with the whole of the square, inscribing a broken horizontal line along the perimeter of the public space. Finally, MVRDV (Rotterdam) acted upon the paving through an evocation of a series of different kinds of sports grounds.” (MACBA website) Documenting the exhibition are design development drawings, correspondence, project descriptions, budgets, notes, and reference, graphic and photographic materials.

AP207.S1.1971.PR02
Description:
This project series documents five of the fifteen proposals submitted by Pettena for the Trigon competition in Graz, Austria, in 1971. The proposals documented in this project series are the following: Proposal n° 7 "Imprisonment" and "Architectural project #2 (Planes crossing)"; Proposal n° 11 "Instantaneous birth"; Proposal n° 12 "Conservazione"; Proposal n° 13 "Sedie e tavolo d’erba"; and Proposal n° 14 "Grass Architecture" I, II, and III. Pettena won the first prize for both his proposal "Imprisonment" and "Architectural Project #2" (Proposal n° 7) and for "Grass Architecture" I and II (Proposal n° 14). In these proposals, Pettena "questioned the temporal dimension of architecture as well as its relationship with nature." [1] The proposal "Grass Architecture" consists of shapes of grass rising from the ground, creating a perishable form of architecture coming from within and becoming part of the territory. The "Imprisonment" and "Architectural Project #2" proposals are a variation of Pettena's previous performance project "Cancellazione di uno stato" in 1970. These proposals consist of "trails of passing airplanes crisscrossing? the sky, creating the outlines of a grid of clouds. Here, the legacy of the grid in modern architecture is rendered formless, as if “naturalized” by the evaporation of the clouds, subject to chance and the freely drifting trails left by the airplanes." [2] The project series contains presentation drawings (five original drawings, seventeen reprographic copies, and four photographic reproductions), for Pettena's proposals "Imprisonment" and "Architectural project #2 (Planes crossing)", "Instantaneous birth", "Conservazione", "Sedie e tavolo d’erba", and "Grass Architecture" I, II, and III. The project series also includes photographs of models for the "Grass Architecture" proposal. Description:
Project series comprises design and promotional material for a bed entitled "Il carro di giove" designed by Poli in 1991. The bed was made for F.lli Ciulli (likely Fratelli Ciulli), based in Florence, Italy, and an accompanying blanket was made for the textile design company Fanair. The bed project was featured in the 1991 publication Catalogo Armonia by publisher Ponte alla Grazie in Florence, as well as the April 1992 issue of Casa Vogue (no. 240). The design features a large alabaster disc suspended from an iron frame. Project material in the series ranges from early sketches to drawings and collages of the bed in various media, with some drawings overlayed with wax and silver paper. Also included are excerpted pages from the Catalogo Armonia, featuring a conversation with Sergio Cammilli, who commissioned furniture designs from architects and contemporary artists. The Catalogo Armonia pages also feature images of the bed and blanket prototype. This project series includes textile reference studies, though no drawings or designs for the bed's blanket were received from Poli.
